As a group after long deliberation and consultation with our professors decided to switch projects and move away from the passport application project. After meeting with Dr. Alex Carter, we decided to work with him to create a device that will produce biofeedback for patients who need upper extremity rehabilitation after a stroke. This biofeedback will stimulate the patient’s visual, auditory, and tactile senses to further encourage their progress and success in their therapy. We submitted our revised project scope as of last night and have moved onto the research phase. We are currently working on researching the background and existing solutions through a literature search including references provided directly from Dr. Carter in order to create our preliminary report. We have also started to define our design specifications and will discuss them with Dr. Carter at our next meeting early next week so that they will be finely tuned before being included in our report.

After receiving our graded project scope, we discovered concerns regarding our project from Dr. Yin and Dr. Klaesner. Both professors were concerned with whether or not the project was design oriented enough for the course. After a Skype meeting with Dr. Yin at 9PM on 9/20/2017, we clarified the issues with the current project scope and what corrections would need to be made in order to frame the project into one with a possibility for success. The main points of objection were an unconvincing need for the application to be mobile phone based, and the specification that we would handle and store the data within the app rather than just create a simple portal to existing online locations. Towards the end of the meeting, Dr. Yin suggested working in parallel to try to justify the app project as well as searching for potential new clients due to the concerns with the current project.
Before the week is over we plan to have consulted Dr. Gleva to determine her exact specifications and vision for the project to decide if it is possible to move forward. We also plan to consult an application development expert to get a more educated opinion on how much design and creativity can be put into this project, and whether or not it is suitable for senior design. In order to find a new client with a more design oriented project should we need to switch clients, we plan to look at and discuss further the 3 projects offered by Dr. Yin, and discuss with Professor Klaesner’s suggested client Dr. Alex Carter regarding his project. After determining the new direction of our project within our group, we plan to Skype with Dr. Yin once more this weekend to confirm the new project and craft a new project scope. With the projects, we will design a new project scope and need statement in time for the submission date on Monday. We have decided to partner with Dr. Marye Gleva for our senior design project. Dr. Gleva’s research focuses on congenital heart disease, thus our project aims to help facilitate transition of care from pediatric cardiology to adult cardiology. After receiving treatment for their heart conditions, young adults who’ve had little to no complications since childhood easily neglect monitoring their health and keeping health records. This proves to be very dangerous especially if they succumb to heart problems later in life-- they aren’t equipped for this emotionally or medically.
Our project aims to combat this issue by creating a smartphone app that will replace the current, not often utilized “passport” (paper records) standard and provide children and young adults with a convenient copy of their medical records such as prior surgeries, medications, and EKG readings. This tool will encourage young adults to take ownership of their health and anticipate potential downstream conditions. After adopting the app into their lifestyle, they should readily be able to communicate with their future doctors about their conditions and make appropriate decisions for optimal care. Currently, we have an upcoming meet with Dr. Gleva on Friday, September 15th to confirm the specifications and scope of the project. We also plan on acquiring her formal signature in recognition of her role as our client. |
